I live in FL.
I'm currently doing my pre-reqs at Miami dade college. I have 2 semesters left and so far I have a 4.0 science GPA and 3.8 cum. I'm thinking about nursing schools and wondering which ones are the best.
I know Nova is pretty expensive but I really want my BSN (eventually my Master's too ) and I also know of their baptist scholarship so Nova is definitely on my list.. for the Miami campus btw. Is this a good nursing program and is it worth it?
Then there's the Miami dade college of nursing program, which only offers the ASN. (i'm only 19 and have no other degrees/medical experience so I can't go straight to their BSN program). MDC is much more affordable and so much closer to home, BUT.. I've heard several things about this program not being so great?.. It also bothers me that I'd have to go through the ASN route because that would delay me in reaching my goal of getting a Master's degree in the future.
What are your thoughts? What do you know of these schools and their nursing programs? The most obvious goal that I have is that I get into a school that will help me pass the NCLEX. Is MDC a good school for nursing? or is Nova better? Is it just smarter to go to MDC for financial reasons? -- I definitely do not come from a family of money and I don't want to be in debt.
I REALLY wanted to apply to FIU's nursing program too, but I won't have my pre-requisites done in time (I'd have to wait a full freaking year since admission is only once a year) so my
options are only Nova and MDC.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I don't know either school, but...
1. Look at NCLEX pass rates for both schools. Higher is not always better. Some schools weed out everyone they think won't pass the NCLEX in order to keep the pass rate high.
2. Look at the percentage of students who complete the program. if only 50% of the students who start finish, the school might be weeding out some to keep their NCLEX pass rate high. Or, it just might be that the school accepts people who are not ready for college.
3. Look at cost. There are calculators online that'll show you how much per month you'll need to pay on your loans for 10, 20, or even 30 years! If you know you want to get a master's, do you really want to spend a lot on undergrad? That loan repayment will be very burdensome.
Good luck!

I am currently in the ASN program over at MDC. I should graduate on April of next year. Financially speaking MDC is gonna make a lot more sense. From what i heard the Nova program is more strict than MDC. I can tell you that so far in my class out of the 50 or so students that started with me about 15 or so have failed and we are halfway through the program. I personally don't find the school as challenging as everyone made it out to be but at the end of the day it is the HESI exit exam and the NCLEX that will determine whether you were successful or not. The moment you set foot in nursing everything you do revolves around that exam and you passing it. Every question, every assignment revolves around NCLEX preparation.
If you have any particular questions about the school just let me know. One thing you need to keep in mind is that your only 19 years old. You have plenty of time. Take it easy...its okay if school takes you an extra year.
