Nova Southeastern Anyone???

Published

Is anyone in the NSU program? I'm applying for the Fall, but have heard some contradicting things about it. Is it a good education for the money? I refuse to go to PBCC after some of the experiences I had w/ the teaching staff while taking pre-requisites. I have had some downright morons...and if I'm going to do this I want to get the best education possible. I'm looking at going way past my B.S., so a good start and good base education is important to me.

TIA

NSU is a difficult program. I know, that is where I started.

It is difficult but I believe that you get a great education for the money. I have a very good friend of mine who I met there during the first semester.

The instructors, the clinical instructors, proffesors, tutors.... everyone treats you with the upmost respect. and if you do not like the way that a clinical instructor treats you, they will fire them and put in a new one. No kidding you.

NSU has an awesome nursing student lab that actually looks like a real hospital! it has ambu bags, O2 set up, dummies and even a nurses station.

To get in is very competetive. I know when I started they told us that they chose us out of 175 people who interviewed.

I applied, got my letter for the interview, I went to the interview and I got in.

I was intereviewed by the dean and two proffessors of the program. I was nervous, but I could BS my way from questions that come out of nowhere. So I got in.

THe school is great, the library is huge!

50 people started with me, and 36 people graduated may 07

For me, I am a critical thinking person, and straight up memory is not my best.

The first semester:

  • advanced anatomy and physiology
  • advance anatomy and physiology lab
  • online writing 1/3
  • nursing as a proffessional (nursing theory)
  • nursing as a scholar (computer)

and we were there the entire week. monday thru friday from 9-2

I used to study so much for the anatomy class. but honest, it was just straight up memory. no critical thinking whatsoever.

So I ended up failing the anatomy and physiology class. and it was not the school's fault. It was me that I did not get the information sinking into my brain.

I did well in the other classes that I took, the nursing theory was all critical thinking and I got a B+ in that class!!

I loved that school. to me it would of been worth it staying there for the 27 months (now it is 31 months).

the dean signed me up for the following semester, to re-take the anatomy class. but I decided not to go because I had been accepted to BCC

BCC - was easy for me. No research papers, attended school only 3 times a week, one class every 8 weeks.......... how can you beat that??

I wish I would of been smart enough to stay at NSU. But things happen for a reason.

I had a baby in the middle of nursing school at BCC, if I was at NOVA I couldn't have done that with ease.

but now, I am an RN, I have to go back to get my BSN at FIU (Cheaper!) and I will have the hospital pay for it!! (no loans, and more money in my pocket)

BCC and just like any other public school doesn't care about the students, if you complain, they don't care, they make you cry (me and a lot of my classmates)... we get treated really bad... but we put up with it because we have no choice. One girl who spoke up for herself, ended up failing the semester.... but as students we cared, but them as instructors didn't care.

I think if you can do it at NOVA, go for it, yeah you will have tons of loans at the end, but you will end up loving nursing school, get treated with respect, and have BSN at the end!

:nurse: good luck!

Thank you so much for that information! I cannot tell you what a help that was and how excited I am to start this process. I'm glad to hear that it will be a challange, and even more thrilled to learn that they actually care what the student experience is. I knew that the facility would be a lot better than you would find at the CCs around here.

Congratulations on finishing your RN and continuing on for your BSN. Good luck with everything! When did you finish? My SIL's friend graduated from there last year. She had a lot of negative things to say about the BCC program as you did.

thanks!

yes at NSU they do care about the students. When I was failing my class, the Dean called me to her office and asked me what was going on, suggested private tutoring (which I did that, but it didn't work)...

but it is worth every penny. Once you've been there you can say "you get what you pay for"

BCC was way way different.

I graduated BCC-South campus class of august 07

So far everyone has passed boards, and I think everyone is working right now that I know of. Only 3 people out of 45 students that graduated with me failed boards the first time. The second time they passed.

BCC is tough, but as long as you don't complain, keep your mouth shut, and do everything exactly as you are told, you will be fine....(but may have some tears a long the way).

I would definitely recommend NOVA SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY to anyone. The school is that worth it, there were people comming from homestead, FL and even W.Palm beach, FL...... long drives but worth the drive.

I remember my friend always telling me what she was doing, and they teach you based on the NCLEX-RN exam. All the tests are NCLEX type, they all have select all that apply, fill-in the blank, they let you use calculators..... they don't teach you things that do not pertain to a nurse. You have to pass the HESI exit exams each semesters in order to move on to the next semester. >>>-- something that BCC lacks.

BCC did not prepare me at all for the NCLEX, I think that we all passed because at least 98% or people took kaplan or had a kaplan password from other students.

I remember talking to my friend about the pediatric growth scale... and she was like "what's that?" and I said "you don't know that?" she is like, look in an nclex book, if its there then you need to know it and if it is not there then you dont.... long and behold, it was not there.

BCC teaches you things and some teachers teach you what you need to know and some teach you too much. Oh yeah, and BCC doesn't let you use calculators and NOVA does.

BumbleBee,

What were the kind of questions they asked you in your interview with

NOVA? I am applying for their nursing program and I am a bit nervous about the interview!! Thanks!
