I was hired by a ltc along with a few other people. Its my first job out of school.
While orienting I found all the others that were hired have 5-12 yrs experience already. I have none.
When the nurses whom I am shadowing ask me how many years nursing I have they seem shocked when I tell them this is my first job.
I know everyone has to start somewhere and I thought it was going to be a ltc but what is the deal with all the shocked looks when I tell them its my first job?? Kind of makes me think I shouldn't be there.
They are nice.. and willing to mentor, after the first week they wanted to put me on my own floor..I told them I needed more time for learning the paperwork, I am capable doing all the treatment cares and med pass and skilled charting, even made the assesment for er admit my 3rd day when I was second guessing myself because I was new-they were supportive about my decision and the person got the treatment they needed.
So, Im not complaining its been great... just wondering if maybe some facilities dont hire right out of school and thats why Im getting all the shocked looks, or maybe they are just being nice and hiding the OMG I can't
believe they put her with me look and the shock look is that surfacing.

Maybe you come across very well and confident and competent so they are amazed you are new. Maybe it's a positive look and not negative as you perceive. :)

on another positive note, maybe you are the first new grad in a long time because they (the nurses) had bad experiences in the past and asked that no new grads be hired? if so, the bad experiences was not because of the former new grads. it was because the nurses did not provide training or support. now the nurses seem to be providing great support!
