Not sure if I posted this in the right section but does anybody know if a hospital requires their employees to be non-smokers, is it alright if his/her spouse smokes? I don't smoke but I want to apply for a job that says they test applicants for nicotine. My wife doesn't work so I would need to get family health insurance.

Some hospitals do require their employees to be non-smokers. Depends on the hospital. The one I am looking to work at soon (I pray) requires you not to be a smoker. They have a program though to help you quit, and you have to quit within the first month of hire. I know you said you don't smoke, but that's the info I have. Not sure about a spouse though, I would guess it wouldn't have anything to do with you getting hired but insurance wise it might. All I can say is check with the hospital you are looking to work for. Best of luck.
Yes, my wife smokes and I don't. It's probably best for me to talk directly to the hospital to see if this disqualifies me from employment or health insurance coverage for my wife. But if anybody works at a hospital that doesn't allow smokers, please feel free to comment about this situation. Thanks.
Like I said. Won't affect your employment there. Just possibly your insurance.
