No housing?

Published

I just talked to a recruiter that quoted a great pay package until he mentioned at the end that I'd have to look for and pay for my own hotel out of my pocket! Then he Googled hotels in the area and quoted me about $250 a week, but that's if I only stayed there on work days and traveled 60 miles back home on my days off. I thought housing, whether it comes out of my pay package or not, was provided by the company. Has anyone had to find their own housing with no kind of housing subsidy or anything?

Whether the agency finds the housing and provides it or you do is up to the agency and you. It is a lot of work and risk to find housing, furnishings, and utilities, so of course the agency would like to unload all that on you. However, many experienced travelers prefer to find their own housing for many reason, including saving sometimes a considerable amount of left over tax free money from the housing stipend. You should talk to more agencies as there may well be other unpleasant surprises from dealing with a single agency, and there are many benefits to talking to many agencies.
