The first question I had when I visited these boards, and a question I've seen posted since, is: I want to go into nursing, but I have no prior healthcare experience. I have worked for (insert number) years in (insert field, such as administration) but have never worked in a healthcare environment. Can I still get into nursing school?
That was my situation, and I am excited to say I DID get into nursing school! I got my acceptance letter (for an accelerated program) yesterday. So, to all of you who come to this board seeking answers, my advice is: don't let the lack of a healthcare background stop you from applying for nursing school.
I spent over 20 years in administrative support jobs, but I always wanted to become a nurse. At 45 years old, I feel a little ridiculous expressing how very excited I am to be embarking on this new career path, but... I AM!
Thanks to everyone on these boards who has offered advice and support, both on- and off-list. I think of you all as friends.
Congrats! :)-Just out of curiousity where did you apply?
Thanks, Scoob!
Because my husband and I are established in our community, I only had two choices of schools to apply to. One was a community college with a two-year waiting list and multiple requirements that I didn't meet (they essentially want you to be a CNA before you apply to their NS), and the other is the university. That's where I applied: the University of New Mexico.
When I applied, they still accepted applications under an "accelerated" BSN program, but they've since changed the program for both the accelerated and the 4-year program to where everyone now take the same curriculum over 16 months (I believe).
And let me not be disingenuous at all about my lack of healthcare experience. I had previously (over the course of 20+ years) cared for seriously ill family members, and when I began taking my pre-reqs in Jan 2006, I started volunteering on the board of a health-related association. The same month I submitted my application, I finally began volunteering in an actual medical setting at a local hospital. That was the extent of my "healthcare" experience when I was accepted to the nursing program. All of my work experience was in office administration.
Best of luck to all of you, and thanks for all the well-wishes!
