NNP clinical placements?

Published

Is there any place where I can find help with getting an NNP clinical placement? When I applied to my program, the website said it helps with placement. However, they only help with placement within the state. My home facility has a new grad NNP and I've reached out to other hospitals here with no response. I'm at a loss and cannot afford to fly back and forth between that state and home.

If no local hospitals are responding, it sounds like you will have to move to the state where your program is located and take loans to live off or delay your clinical time until you can save up the money to move there temporarily.

That's truly unfortunate and I certainly feel for you. It is really important to consider this critical aspect of training before embarking on a program. Rarely do programs fully arrange out of state clinicals. Nor do they have the resources for maintaining clinical affiliations in every location across the country. When schools say they "assist" with clinical sites out of state, this often means they will assist with the paperwork and legal agreements once you have found your own preceptor/site. I know this doesn't help you at this point but hopefully someone else on the site can learn from this experience.

Can you spend some of your time being precepted by a neonatologist? Many programs will allow some or all of the clinical experience to be supervised by a physician. You can check if there is a local chapter of the National Association of Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (NANNP) or other NP professional organization. You might be able to network into something but to be honest, it's a long shot and your best bet is, as babyNP pointed out, to find a way to spend time in the state your school is in. There are some 3rd party organizations that will, for a fee, try to help you locate preceptors but this often relies on NPs who have signed up with them to be matched and NNPs are few and far between.
