NJ Transfer student applying to FIU, UCF, NOVA, and UF nursing program

Published

Hello, I have a few questions and I'm really hoping someone who goes to any of these universities can answer or help me. If you have transferred to FIU, UCF, NOVA or UF nursing program from out of state or even in state PLEASE tell me what you think of my situation, or even your experience.

I am a current student in NJ attending a community college to do my prerequisites for the nursing program. By the end of this fall '13 semester, i will have Anatomy 1 & 2, Intro to Psych, Lifespan Development, Intercultural Communication, completed. For the upcoming semester in the spring '14, I will be taking Microbiology and Statistics.

I was interested into transferring to FIU, UCF, NOVA, or UF for the BSN program for the fall of 2014. I am really afraid I won't get accepted to any because I would be a transfer student and because of how competitive the field is.

I have a 4.0 GPA right now, but in my Anatomy 2 class which I will be finishing this December, I currently have a B (85). I still have 2 more exams to bring that up, but I'm afraid if I don't do well on those and stay with the B for A&P 2, it will drop my overall GPA down to like a 3.6. Do you think they would even consider a transfer student for the nursing program with a GPA like that??

& will they even consider to accept you into the program if you haven't completed every prerequisite???? The reason I ask is because I will still need to take Chemistry and Nutrition

Also, if you did get accepted to any of these universities as a transfer, what did you do to get in??? (grades? gpa? classes taken? volunteer?, etc ) please & thank you

Most of the colleges here are transfer students.

The programs you are talking about are all good...but have a wide range in cost. I guess it will be very similar if you are paying out of state tuition, though.

Nova allows you to apply to the program (I believe twice a year) and you can still be in the process of completing your prerequisites. They allow you to be completing that term prior.

FIU ...I believe...has their own prerequisite class you have to take at FIU in addition to what most schools ask for.

The other 2 further north...I havent looked into. I am applying to FAU. They have a very good program as well but the applications are due by Jan. and they start in May. You can still be completing some prereq. but micro and stats have to be done before to be calculated in the gpa.

Your gpa is fine for any of them I would think. Just try and keep the rest of your grades about the same.

Thank you so much for answering, I appreciate it. I recently heard about FAU as well on this forum, I want to look into their program as well then. Im just worried I won't get accepted because I'm transferring out of state.

Are there any other schools you're applying to?

Im only applying to one. I have to think about distance and around here...we have Broward College, FAU, FIU, and then the private schools like Nova, Barry University, Kieser, Chamberland, University of Miami.

Nova and Barry are very good schools but they are a huge jump in cost from the public universities. FIU had a class that was required at their campus and I would prefer to try FAU first. I graduated from FAU and I have had wonderful experiences there and I love their teaching philosophy. I think it is a perfect fit for me. Barry is very expensive so I havent even looked there. University of Miami looks good too but it is such a long drive with traffic that I really cant consider that.

Sounds like you wont have those issues because you can live close to campus! That is a huge plus!!

The pre-requisites that you mentioned are inadequate to enter directly in BSN Program at pretty much all the schools you listed. You need to look closely at the requirements for the targeted schools to make sure you have met the prerequisites. If you plan on attending in the fall of 2014 you will need approximately 60 credit hours of prerequisites to enter directly into in the BSN program at the College/Universities you mentioned in your post.

The fact that you are an out of State Student doesn't really create a disadvantage and more than likely (IMHO) it is an advantage, since the State of Florida Universities (FAU, FIU, UCF, UF, etc.) gets to charge 3 - 4 times the Tuition they charge Instate Students. How many credit hours do you anticipate having by the Fall of 2014? If money/tuition is an issue, the sooner you can establish State of Florida Residence, the better position you will be in as far as tuition is concern.

Thank you for responding, but by the fall of 2014 I'll have about 45 credits done. Does that mean I have absolutely no chance of getting in to any of the schools, because I wouldn't mind if I had to take a class or 2 before getting into the program, I just want to make sure I get in a program

If I were you I would look into the nursing program at Nova. The money difference between Out state and in state student is not that much. Also you do not need the have all the 60 credits to get in.

I just get accepted and will start in January....

Your Gpa seems good just keep it up. You will be fine.

Good luck.

thank you for responding. Congrats on getting into Nova! If you don't mind me asking, what was your GPA since you got accepted? I just want to know if I have a chance or not
