NJ Staffing Disclosure Law signed by Governor!

Published

On Monday, January 24, 2005, NJ Acting Governore Cody signed the Staffing Disclosure Bill. This bill requires posting each shift of the patient census, # of RNs actually doing patient care, as well as the # of specific ancillary personel. This information must be made available to the public and must be collected and turned into the Department of Health (DOH).

Nurses from HPAE worked hard on this - as a first step toward actually obtaining good, mandated ratios. The full bill can be viewed at http://www.hpae.org. Click on "Legislative Update", then click on the staffing disclosure bill.

The bill now goes to the DOH to work on rules and regulations for implementation scheduled to start in 6 months.

I am a new RN in Ocean County and I will start work in 2 weeks. I would like to become more active in the politics of nursing, however, getting thru school and the state boards were priority... now I am ready. I start my BSN program next week and I just want to thank you for this thread in which you broaden the horizons for me. I would like to become active with issues in our state.. keep us posted! Thanks

So here is a monumental FIRST step towards safe staffing laws in NJ and no responses? I am surprised but also not surprised to see that basically no one has responded to this post! That is the problem I see in the state of NJ. I see the CA nurses association sueing Gov. AHNOLD and I see the posting from the MA nurses association re: the farce of Magnet status.........but nothing from NJ. I have been mentioning this bill at the hospital I work at and virtually no one has heard of it or comments on it's importance! Nurses in NJ need to be much stronger politically and make this issue known to the public. When patients tell me......oh, it seems short here tonight......I tell them about the bill and I tell them how important it is to have safe staffing. When I complain about being unable to care for 8 or 9 med/surg patients I'm told......do the best you can. Well, guess what, I can't be the BEST when I'm taking care of that many patients.....and I can't take care of 3 ICU patients either........yet I see this kind of staffing (and worse) in ALOT of NJ hospitals! That is because NJ nurses are weak and have accepted this unacceptable staffing as the norm!

WAKE UP NJ NURSES!!!!!!!!!

I am curious, does this legislation apply to a VA facillity as well. So much does not & they hide under the guise of being a federal facillity...
