Hey I applied as a transfer student (associates in science geared towards nursing)to NIU. I am trying to find out what are the chances I will get in and how many transfers do they usually take in? Also if anyone has been to NIU what the program was like for them. Also what are other decent nursing programs in illinois I should look into applying to? I know it's a lot of rambling, but thank you in advance. :)
I am a transfer student who was accepted for Fall 2017 at NIU. My letter was addressed March 28th. At my current university, I have a 3.7. I am super excited to begin! I may not have had a 3.8-4.0, and at some universities my GPA was not great but I have extensive credits with high grades in liberal arts, honors, PTK, research, volunteering, CNA certification, BLS certification, CNA job... the works. I'm just polishing off the very last prereq's/AS requirements this semester. Everything but a bachelor's...
I can only assume they can see my "outstanding achievement,"... but inside I am intimidated and anxious to begin, wondering how nursing school will change my life (and me) (and my relationships) (and finances) Ahhh! hahaha.
Yeah, how is NIU's nursing program??
Don't even bother with any program that is not CCNE accredited. You need your school to be CCNE accredited ideally, although I think there is another okay accreditation called ACEN or something that is also used for ADN programs, while CCNE is concurrently used for MSN and BSN.
As for how I made my decision, I decided that I wanted to stay within an hour and a half from Chicago, where my friends and SO live, not all the way in WIU or Lakeview in Charleston or SIU in Edwardsville. Finally, I wanted a program no longer than 2.5 years of pure nursing classes. So Illinois Weseylan and Loyola and DePaul and SXU were left out.
In summary, UIC and Saint Xavier are highest rated in the state of IL, but fit DOES matter. And the timeline of when they accept you. I immediately got accepted into NIU, and while I would have liked to try my chances at ISU or Aurora or UIC, their deadlines were so late and trudgingly slow that I want to get my BSN sooner rather than later, and NIU is rated highly from what I can tell, so I'm starting Fall 2017.
Sorry this is so long, I only hope that seeing how I narrowed it down will help you feel confident in how YOU choose to decide where to make this important step in your career! It will probably be different than mine but you need to make it fit in your life how you choose!

Hey Madeline125,
I was accepted for the Spring track, maybe I'll see you in orientation. I too am finishing up my AS degree! Exciting journey ahead for the both of us.
Hey roj220082, that would be awesome! Happy graduation and we'll probably run into each other at some point, the program is only so big! What do you think you're going to do until Spring? Be a CNA?
I have children, so I'm just gonna focus on them, because school will take up most of my time when I start. I'm already a CNA, I work at Rush as a mobility coach, tele tech, and Clinical Associate (glorified cna).
Im also going to secure nursing based scholarships now that I've been accepted. Last but not least, I'm going work and save my money, I'm sure I'll cut back hours when school starts.

I noticed that all of the NIU scholarships for nursing have technically ended, so I left a message with the nursing program to see if I missed something. Hopefully that's just an error and we can still apply! I didn't count on being accepted, I wanted to be pleasantly surprised XD
That's cool that you work at Rush. One day I want to work there. This summer I'm going to work most of the summer as a home health cna, then move into an apartment in the DeKalb area and basically get settled and prepare for the program!

Just google illinois nursing scholarships, I'm sure you will find some that you qualify for. Also download this app called "Scholly," theirs a small fee, but worth it.
Working as a CNA before is great experience, you can learn from your nurses, and apply what you see on the floor to your clinicals and courses.
