I just joined this website which seems to be very insightful.
I am a NICU nurse with 25+ yrs. experience. I am relocating to Las Vegas as my kids have recently moved there. I just got back from visiting them and I absolutely loved it!
I see that there are many NICU positions available, and I am trying to figure out what the best hospitals are to work for. Pay is pretty comparable, whether the hospital is union or not.
I have interviewed with St. Rose, Summerlin, Sunrise Children's Hospital, Valley Hospital, and Spring Valley.
All except for St. Rose, offer sign-on bonus.
Everyone that I have spoken with, asks me where I'm going to live.
I'm not sure yet.
Are all of these hospitals fairly comparable? And what union do the nurses belong to?

There are three hospital corporations in Las Vegas and one "teaching/county" hospital. HCA owns MountainView, Southern Hills and Sunrise, their "flagship" facility. Valley Healthcare owns Valley, Spring Valley, Summerlin, and the new Centenial hospitals. The Catholic healthcare group is the St. Rose Dominican, Sienna, and the new San Martine hospitals. University Medical Center was the county hospital that has grown up and now is a teaching facility: it is in financial trouble bigtime! Each company has its strengths and weaknesses. All are in the business to make a profit. None are very patient-centered, pro-nursing, so don't kid yourself on that account.
The union in town for nurses is SEIU. Feel free to contact me privately. They have made some good things happen. they have done nothing for nursing in other areas. 'Nuf said.
You DO need to know where you are going to live before you decide where to work!!! Traffic in Las Vegas is terrible and you do NOT, at your age, (25+years experience means you are not 25 anymore) you do NOT want a long commute to work!!! PLEASE believe me on this one! I used to drive 16 miles a day...I changed jobs and now drive 1 mile each way! the reduction in my stress and my gasoline bill is phenomenal!
good luck and welcome to Vegas.:welcome:
