I'm an L&D nurse and I have an interview Friday for a PRN job at THE NICU in the area.
Any tips?
Does anyone have any examples of good answers to typical questions such as "why NICU?" I don't have any personal experience that drove me to NICU I just find it fascinating.
In my cover letter I talked about how NICU was a unique combination of newborn care, intensive care, and parent education and how I loved how nurses could care for the same babies for weeks or months and form a bond with the family.
In my interview I was thinking I could mention that a downside to L&D is often only seeing patients for one shift and the NICU appeals to me because there is more continuity of care.
And when we delivered a premature or compromised baby on L&D we often never knew what happened after delivery.
I always had a strong urge to know how the baby was doing and would sometimes visit the NICU and speak to the nurse to check up on a baby I delivered. But there was still still so much about that world I wanted to learn and understand since so much of it was foreign to me.
Anything I should ask them?
Since the position is PRN and I have no NICU experience I want to get a good understanding of orientation.
What would be a decent amount of orientation to expect?
12 weeks is standard right?

Hello,
Just wanted to wish you good luck with the interview.
Thanks!
I think it went well, but hard to say.
I'll hear in Jan.
It seems like a great unit and I really want the job!
Happy thoughts appreciated :)
Well, I hope you get a call to come work for them in January. Fingers crossed. :)
