Hi,

We have recently had a delivery of a newborn whose mother routinely used herione. At present, the newborn shows not symptom of withdrawl. (only 2 days). Does anyone have an specifics on newborn care and follow up. Should these newborn be kept in the NICU? Are there specific policies related to their care?

Thanks,

D

It all is dependent on the severity of the withdraws the baby shows. Some are so severe the baby has a hard time eating and sleeping, so they will need to be given OG feedings or IV's with or without meds to help with the withdraws, I prefer with meds. Some can be managed at home and there is no need for an admit to the NICU. All do seem to get a terrible diaper rash so start on desitin early and keep their little butts as clean as you can. As for the timming of the withdraws (only 2 days) it depends on moms last use. There is more to these babies like in regards to using breast milk as well as issues regarding Hepatitis, but we are getting close to medical advice there so you want to look those up.
