New to traveling- Land accounts?!

Published

Hey guys!

I am going through the paperwork necessary to get started on my first travel assignment, and I am working on the form for the IRS to say I have a permanent tax residence, and one question asks if I have any land accounts....land accounts?! I have no clue what that is, and googling it didn't clear things up. Does anybody know what a land account is?

Thaaanks!

You are working on a housing questionnaire your agency gave you, right? Either ask your agency, or just state "no" because since you don't know what it is, I'm quite sure you don't have one.

If you do find out, let us know!

Yes, I am working on the housing questionnaire. I asked my recruiter and the guy that does my taxes, but neither of them knew. I'll just go with "no". Thanks, Ned!

Yup, I've never heard of it either. And I'm a guy who enjoys reading IRS publications as I do my own taxes.

By the way, if you haven't traveled before, it may pay to get a new tax guy. The taxation for travelers is outside the normal experience of bread and butter tax preparers, and even CPAs or EAs. The advice a travel specialist gives you about your tax home before you start could by itself could save you a heap of grief years down the road. If you Google "travel tax" you will find the best known travel specialist. There is also a ton of useful information on his site about taxes and travel nursing, including exactly why your agency is making you do this housing questionnaire, and why their criteria for avoiding audits may not be enough to avoid grief if you get audited (for any reason) personally. PanTravelers is another good site to read about taxes and travel.

Excellent! I'll check it out. Thanks!!
