New travel nurse, traveling with pets

I leave in 2 weeks for my first assignment as a travel nurse (I'm so excited!) and I'm taking 2 cats and 1 puppy with me. My cats don't like traveling at all so I called my vets office today to ask what I could give my kitties before traveling so they wouldn't get so upset. They told me they have a controlled substance I can give them, but I have to bring both of them in for a check up before they can release the med to me. They're going to charge me about $60 for the exam and then $15 for the med. Since I'm about to leave and I'm trying to tie up all loose ends here before my first assignment, I'm a little short on cash. Does anyone have any recommendations on what I can give my cats OTC or do you think I should go ahead and take them in and pay for this controlled substance?

Please post quickly, my vet appointment is at 9:30 tomorrow (6/4) morning.

Hi !!! The controlled substance will probably be your best bet but you can also try something called "Feliway" which is supposed to really relax your kitties. Have you ever traveled with them before ??? One of my cats, Milo, is great in the car, he could ride for hours.... another of my cats, Oscar, gets sick by the time the car pulls out of the garage.... when I say sick I mean sick ! :uhoh21:

Benadryl has been recommended to me by my vet but I'm not sure if it works.

In the past, I've taken them home to visit my family until it got to be too much! Bella does pretty good, but Nate is a bear! I can't imagine having to ride 10 hours with them without them being sedated!

uuugh then i would say go ahead and get it from the vet . It is a sure fire way to make them calm down !

My husband and I drove from NC to CA 3 weeks ago (6 day drive) with our 12 year old cat (who has always HATED the car-the cat, not my husband!) I did get a prescription for Acepromazine (kitty valium), just in case we needed it. The vet suggested we give her a test dose at home before the trip to see how she would respond-she was pitiful-like a crying drunk!!! So we decided to see how she would do without it and only use it if she absolutely went beserk in the car. After the first two hours in the car-she settled in quite nicely! We took her out of the carrier, and only used it for transporting her in and out of the car for hotel stops (which she really enjoyed!) She would find a spot and stay put for most of the day. Every now and then, she would want to sit in my lap (passenger), but then she would go back to her spot. I fed her in the am (as soon as we woke up, so she would have time to "do her business" before we got in the car) and in the pm when we arrived at our hotel for the night. (we did keep a litter box available for her, but ,thankfully she never needed to use it en route. She did fabulously! I was very proud of my old baby (the cat, not my husband!) Good luck!

I know dogs can take benadryl, and even reglan, but I'm not sure about cats.

Sorry. Trying calling another vet and just asking if there's anything OTC cats can take?
