New here and seeking advise re: admission to Nursing School

Published

Hello. I am enjoying this site. I am trying to realize my lifelong dream of becoming an R.N. and I have a few questions about getting into to nursing school I hope someone here can help me with. I am a former Medical Social Worker and I have a bachelors degree. I have recently found out about the associates degree program at NGCSU and I am very interested in it. I am looking at the admission requirements, and noticed that my GPA is not high enough. I can not find what the classes are required to be admitted to the nursing program, however, I took a statistics class in college, as well as a microbiology class which I think would be helpful. Is there anything I can do or will my GPA hold me back from being admitted. Also am I required to take the TEAS exam if I already have a degree? I worked in nursing homes and have extensive medical terminology background which I think should count for something, but it looks like since my GPA was lower than a 2.75 then I may be out of luck. Can anyone offer any advise? Thank you.

don't have any answers for you...but someone will come along that will. just wanted to welcome you.

You probably will have to take the TEAS even if you already have a degree. I have a Bachelor's degree as well, and I am taking the NET in two days. Doing well on the TEAS will actually help your chances of being accepted, since they will look at your score along with your GPA instead of just basing a decision on your GPA. Also, I know that NGCSU will require two semesters of A&P, so doing well in those classes will help raise your GPA. Good luck!

Welcome!

I am currently a first-year student at NGCSU, and I absolutely love it. Let me encourage you to pursue their program - it is fantastic. I don't think that you will be disappointed.

Regarding your GPA, take heart. Your GPA is not the only thing they consider, but it is important. You will need to make arrangements to take the TEAS, even with another degree under your belt. I also have a previous bachelor's - as well as a majority of my classmates. Some of them even have graduate degrees, as well. (It's an intelligent group of individuals, to say the very least.)

Your med term knowledge will help you out in Fundamentals class, first year. You'll need A&P 1 & 2, as well as Micro and maybe a few others that weren't taken with your first degree. But, don't let this discourage you. You can pull up your GPA in the process and give yourself better odds of being accepted.

I also found this website prior to applying to North Georgia, and I was able to ask questions to current students. It was very helpful to me, at the time. You'll find the students at NGCSU are very loyal to their school and their nursing program. It's not a big program, but we all get to know each other very well, and it's really like one big family. The friendships I've made in nursing school have been some of the best in my life.

Feel free to PM me if you have any additional questions. I'm more than happy to help if I can. Good luck!

Hello. I read your post under the GA Nurses section on All nurses.com

I have a Bachelors and I live in GA also. I am thinking hard about nursing school.

I see you mentioned NGCSU. I have a 2.7 gpa and also 5 classes short of a MBA.

I am thinking of taking my pre reqs in A&P this summer

Could you give me some insight on good programs that I would be able to get into. I amlookin to start school in 2007

I urge all those with previous college credit to just do the very best they can in the Nursing Prereqs...A&P, Chem, MicroBio, and any other required courses. Nursing schools seem to place an emphasis on these science grades and a lower emphasis on your grades in you previous degree.

Even with top grades, nursing schools admissions is competitive so I'd apply to more than one school. Also realize that you have experience that might be a plus in the eyes of a nursing admissions committee, so don't let a 2.75 be the only thing that keeps you from giving nursing school your best shot. Get top grades in the A&P, Chem and other courses and let those more recent courses speak to your current academic abilities.
