New RN looking for job!

Nurses New Nurse

Published

Hello, I passed my boards on 9/28/2007 and have been looking for a position since the 1st week of October 2007. I had one interview and the nurse manager hired 2 people with "experience". She also said she would like to interview me again. Well, its been a rough go without a job. I am applying at nursing homes now in hopes of just getting some clinical experience.I am an older nurse and I do beleive that age is playing a part in this. I also took my boards 9 months after graduation but I did explain the reasons to ther nurse recruiter. I live in a rural area and it would be difficult for me to commute a long distance to a job.The hospital where I am applying is considered to be very poitical

and to survive there you must "fly under the radar". OK--what do you think I should do? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Specializes in Did the job hop, now in MS. Not Bad!!!!!.

Hmmm,,,Hi Hope, I hear a bit of familiarity in your post so, on that note, my question is, how bad is the commute? I live in metro Atlanta, and here it's not uncommon to drive 1-2 hours each way to work. If that's your biggest hurdle and it means more to get that job can you handle it? or move closer?

My biggest concern for myself is my lack of experience, but remember, you have all those clinicals under your belt!! That's experience. Work the NH in the meantime until you find your niche. That will keep your skills current and critical thinking as well as many many pharmacology meds fresh in your thinking.

Now is a good time to be looking. I know in this area, there are new orientation modules starting for new grads coming off December graduation. Put your feelers out.

I got a late start too and just when I think I'm out of fresh starts, I get a jump start or a new lead.

Good luck!

Chloe

Thank you so much Chloe for your reply. I am starting to apply for some big hospitals downstate, they have excellant orientation programs and my commute would be about 139 miles. I could work 12 hour shifts and stay in a room while working the shifts, then come back home. I could divide my time between work and home. I would definitely have better opportunities and could advance faster in my career. You are definitely correct that nursing provides some wonderful opportunities and something else will always be opening up!!!!

:specs:

I am also happy to hear that I am not the only nurse who got a late start after graduating from NS. Lets hear it for all RN's !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hip hip horray!!!
