new RN confused wanted to take Masters

Hello everyone! :)

I definitely need YOUR ADVICES/RECOMMENDATIONS for what/how I should do my next step because I dont know where else to ask except you kind, experienced nurses....:heartbeat:p

and here is my story...

Im a new graduate RN, took my Bachelors in the Philippines 2008, migrated here, and received my license 2010 in California. Since then, I had been applying for tons and tons hospital jobs which I know they require experience. I even applied Reciprocity in New York (which i havent received any info yet). I was so depressed and I felt like I haven't put up all my best effort to search for jobs. But I found this site and it REALLY GAVE ME SO MUCH CONFIDENCE that I am not alone and there are people who are so generous enough to share information where/howtos.

After few months of applying to various places in southern cali, I landed a job in a long term rehab facility in Banning area. I worked there as a charge nurse for few months. I also accepted the job in a home health agency as part time. 3months ago, I only worked in the facility for few days because they made me part time. I enjoyed working there and the environment was good although i never thought i wont be working as full time anymore. However, I was called for an interview last month and I would be starting my orientation in an acute care hospital in Rancho Cucamonga next week.

I am 23, no spouse/children yet. I know I havent had a year of experience or even havent stayed in a job for a year or more, but I always thought I wanted to go back to school for masteral degree but HAVENT THOUGHT OF ANY SCHOOL that will provide in-house schooling. And thought of becoming a full time student in taking my masters while work in the hospital only.

I am a new grad and I know my transition is fast, Im really wasnt sure if i am taking the right step. I wanted to LEARN MORE and STUDY MORE. and not regret that I didn't planned my life ahead.

Apologize for the long essay. Thank you so much for all the replies.

Doesn't seem like you have any restrictions. If you want to get your masters, then do it. :smokin:

There are online BSN to MSN programs, as well as many programs that allow you to take classes part time. Either option would allow you to continue to work while you went back to school. Consider what kind of Masters you want (Nurse Practitioner, Nursing Education, general nursing). I suggest you start looking into larger universities in your area and see what they offer for MSN program options. You can also search the internet for online programs.

I also recommend taking your GRE (graduate school entrance exam) as soon as you can. You'll have to take this test before applying to grad schools. You can also take the test up to five years before you enroll, so if you take it now, you can start your masters in the next five years and not have to re-test.

i agree with the above poster. i do not know from your post why you cannot get a master's degree. i also do not understand why you gave up a part-time job just because it was not full-time without having a full-time job offer first. btw, what does "in-house schooling" mean?

in america you can get your master's degree full-time and work part-time or full-time depending on the program. some universities offer classes (the lecture portion) online. however, as with any nursing program projects involving real human beings and organizations are required and so you must spend time volunteering to complete assignments and projects in your community or within particular health care organizations. this is why people do not work as much or take a full-time course load while working on his/her master's degree.
