New psych nurse here, any advice welcome!!

Specializes in too many to remember.

Hi everybody.

I started a new job two weeks ago as a floor nurse in an inpatient geriatric psych unit after working as a DON in LTC for a year and a half. Prior to that I worked as a charge nurse in a LTC facility for 6 years. I have extensive experience in dementia disorders, and a little experience with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder. I love psychiatry, and I love being a nurse. I did not like being a manager (DON).

I am slowly adjusting to the charting and the organization of the unit. I know I made the right decision switching jobs and I want to be the best nurse I can be.

So, is there any advice out there that anyone can give to me to help me make my transition? I know I am still extremely "task oriented" and I am more used to medical problems. I feel like I am under a microscope right now in my training days, and I want to make sure I am doing the best I can without the past nursing experiences clouding my vision.

God bless.

Welcome and congrats on your new position.

Like you, I would much rather be a clinician than a manager any day.
