New to Peds ED - PRN

Published

Hi everyone,

I have been a nurse for a little over a year now, nine months of which has been in Pediatrics. I am about to start a 2nd job working PRN in a Pediatric Emergency Department. I am completely new to the ER, all of my experience has been on the floor. I was wondering if anyone could give me advice about what to expect in the Peds ED? How should I prepare myself? What are some things I should be aware of/need to know, etc. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

I am sure you will get better advice from Peds exclusive ER nurses but I work in a mixed ER and we take care of peds alot. Just know the stuff covered in PALS/ENPC. You already know the norms for peds vs, so that's a help.

We seem to get mostly respiratory issues with kids and fevers/dehydration.

The major difference between peds unit and ER is your goal is to turn the beds. You can see a lot of kids very quickly. You just have to get used to the faster turnover of pt pace.

The cold season is coming. You'll be getting a lot of asthma/Flu/RSV. Starting lots of IVs. Sometimes they get intubated if they're retracting with low spo2. My experience is parents are crazy. I am a parent and I don't see the need to be. You can be pleasant and still be concerned. Good luck.
