New NYS School Nurse--help.

Published

I just started a position as a school nurse in New York at a very large private school. I am not new to nursing but new to the school setting. The previous nurse, who was supposed to train me, is now MIA, and the administrators have very little information for me, have no real idea when state reports are due, etc. There is no coordinating physician or health assistant. They seem to have flown by the seat of their pants for a few years...not my style. Needless to say, I am very concerned. I plan on scrambling as best I can--making phone calls to NYS, trying desperately to find someone to mentor me, trying to sort through the paperwork and computer files best I can... in the meantime, anyone have any advice? I can't find clear timelines online what reports I need and when they are due (immunization, health assessment) are due. And, yes, I already know what a terrible situation this is, so no need to remind me :(

schoolhealthservicesny.com!!!!!!!

Thanks so much. I am aware of that website and have been sifting through it, and the information is very helpful, especially the info on laws and regulations. Now what I really need are timelines, knowledge of file methods and standard documentation, etc. I guess I'll just have to do what I can! Sigh.

National Association of School Nurses can hook you up with the NY State affiliate and a private school nurses special interest group. http://www.nasn.org

The 4 day NY state orientation starts today. Continuing Education

There is a small school nurses organization for NYC, but I don't know the contact information. They are not affiliated with NASN,
