Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

After thinking about it for over 2 years now, I've decided on a career change. I've always wanted to go into nursing and now I'm very happy with my decision to follow through with my dream. I just don't really know where to start. I would like to get my Associate Degree in Nursing but don't have any of the pre-requisites I would need to get into a program. I currently work on a cruise ship and have a lot of time on my hands so I figured it would be a good time to get my pre requisites done. Is there any way that I could do that online? I would like to have them done by the time I finish my contract on the ship (which would be by the end of next year). Any advice would be great!!

Thats an exciting career!! Yes you can take your pre-reqs online. Start with a community college where you are based or where you use to live and see what classes they offer online. I always thought being a youth director on a cruise ship would be an exciting job. I would start out with a few classes and to see how muchaof a credit load you can take. I took general psychology online over the summer and it was hard! I ended with a A but it deffenetly took time on my part. I like classes in school better but you have to do-what you have to do!

Thanks for the info! I'm just wondering though....if I take the prerequisites online, can I transfer those credits to any school once I decide to apply into a nursing program?

Make sure the college that you take your pre-reqs online at is accredited. It says right on the website if it is or not. If it is accredited you can transfer those credits to any other accredited school when you apply to a nursing program.

Every community college I have seen has been accredited. But check just to make sure. :)

The only thing that might be an issue with online classes, being on a cruise ship, is that some colleges still require a few proctored exams, meaning you might have to go to a campus or other allowed/authorized testing center to take exams for the course, by a specific due date. You would want to find out beforehand if at all possible if the courses/college you are thinking of do that, and what dates you would need to be 'on land.'

That's a good point. That's definitely something to think about. Thanks for the info
