New Nurse VA feedback?

Published

I am graduating from my nursing program in May: this is a second career for me and I have a family including a small child. I need to work where I will have good benefits so as I look at hospitals this has been one of my big factors. I currently work as an Aide for a community hospital in the ICU. We get a lot of patients from the VA before they can be transferred over. All of them have positive feedback and like the care they receive. My goal as a nurse is to become a Nurse Practitioner as well. Our local VA has opened up position postings including New Grad residency. I am seriously debating applying but I don’t personally know any nurses who work for the VA and would love some insight. Some background: I am graduating top of my class, national nurses honor society, I am class representative and have worked as a Tech in the OR for a level 1 trauma center as well as a CNA in the ICU. I have several faculty and professional references, a clean criminal background and do not use any illegal substances.

You will have the 'privilege' of providing care to a special population.

I wish I had considered federal service, but never thought about it. Reading thru some of the postings here, you'll see that fed gov't moves S L O W L Y and to the weird beat of its own drum. And there are problems at times, but that's everywhere.

But for career stability and benefits ...

I wouldn't care and be waiting around just bc I don't know anyone. You have great creds ... why let opp'ty pass you by for some one else.

APPLY, and welcome to AN.

I usually tell new members to use anonymous screen names. Too much crazies in www.

They say that working experience depends on the VA Facility.  Some have much higher acuity patients, larger populations, and more specialties than others, so I suggest, if your really want to know more about this field, check other groups like in FB or check linkedin.

Agreeing. All facilities have their own quirks, so it does behoove an applicant to do some research on line. Also survey reports are goldmines of info.

I found the goodies in survey reports.
