You will have the 'privilege' of providing care to a special population.
I wish I had considered federal service, but never thought about it. Reading thru some of the postings here, you'll see that fed gov't moves S L O W L Y and to the weird beat of its own drum. And there are problems at times, but that's everywhere.
But for career stability and benefits ...
I wouldn't care and be waiting around just bc I don't know anyone. You have great creds ... why let opp'ty pass you by for some one else.

I am graduating from my nursing program in May: this is a second career for me and I have a family including a small child. I need to work where I will have good benefits so as I look at hospitals this has been one of my big factors. I currently work as an Aide for a community hospital in the ICU. We get a lot of patients from the VA before they can be transferred over. All of them have positive feedback and like the care they receive. My goal as a nurse is to become a Nurse Practitioner as well. Our local VA has opened up position postings including New Grad residency. I am seriously debating applying but I don’t personally know any nurses who work for the VA and would love some insight. Some background: I am graduating top of my class, national nurses honor society, I am class representative and have worked as a Tech in the OR for a level 1 trauma center as well as a CNA in the ICU. I have several faculty and professional references, a clean criminal background and do not use any illegal substances.
