New Nurse in NYC

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hello everyone,

In April 2018, I will be graduating with a BSN from a school in Central Texas (where I currently reside). After graduation, I would like to get a job at a hospital in New York City. I am wondering if anybody has any advice about what I can do to be a more competitive candidate, even though I will be a new nurse.

My history: BSN (complete in April 2018), 2 years of Medical Assistant experience at a Family Practice & Urgent Care, BLS & ACLS certifications.

I REALLY would like to work in the ICU (And I know that is a long, loooong shot as a new nurse, especially in New York City, but I would like to give myself the best shot possible) - And if I can't get into an ICU, I would like to get onto a floor that I could easily transfer from to an ICU after a little more experience (end goal is CRNA school at Columbia or SUNY Downstate).

Money is also a factor - which is another reason why I want to be as competitive as possible.

I'm a little lost about what I need to be doing and don't have much direction, and I would REALLY appreciate ANY advice in relation to nursing, graduation, nursing in NYC (best hospitals, living, etc.), ways to make myself a more competitive candidate, or anything else y'all can think of. Thank y'all so much in advance!!!
