New nurse, need advise ASAP

Published

Hello,

I graduated in December of 2015, but took some time off after having a baby. I just recently started working at a long term care facility on the sub acute rehab floor in November. This is my first nursing job. When I interviewed I was told by the DON that at most I would have ten patients and I would recieve up to two weeks orientation. I received a total of four days orientation. One of those days being with a nurse who has never oriented someone before. The nurses have been great but I can't help but feel overwhelmed. There arent always the medications we need, we have to do our own admissions, there are some questionable practices to say the least. The other nurses have 12-14 patients of there own, so most of the time they are too busy to help me. Im nervous my license is at risk. Im also nervous that if i choose to quit, leaving after only two months, I wont be able to get another job. I'm just looking for advice from nurses who may have experienced something like this. Should I stay and try to stick it out or should I quit and hope to find another job where I can aquire the proper training.

How is your relationship with your supervisor? I would start there and tell her that you accepted this position with the understanding that you would have two full weeks of orientation and you do not feel like you can practice safely with the four days they have given you so far. See what happens with that.

I talked with three supervisors. One told me that I will not be getting more orientation time because they won't get bonuses if they pay for the extra staffing. The other two supervisors acknowledged that I was thrown to the wolves and was empathetic but stated I wouldn't be getting more orientation and that basically i needed to give it time. I also left a message that I wanted to speak with the DON but she is hard to get in touch with.
