New to Northeast Ohio

Specializes in Critical Care.

Hello everyone,

I'm moving to Akron, Ohio early next month, and I was hoping if anyone would give me any suggestions or recommendations as to where would be a good place to work. I've been working for 2 years in ICU, and from where I'm staying the closest big hospitals would be Akron General Medical Center, Akron City Hospital (Summa), and Mercy Medical Center.

Any comments would be highly appreciated. Thanks so much!

All three of those are decent places of employment. Personally I would go for Akron City or Mercy over Akron General just based on personal preference. Akron City has a HUGE, brand new, free-standing critical care facility..pretty nice place.

Be sure not to overlook some of the smaller hospitals in the area...many of the community hospitals are a pleasure to work for ( with no parking hassles). Cuyahoga Falls hospital is nice, as is Barberton, both a short drive from Akron.

If you are interested in working with kids, Akron Children's Hospital is a VERY nice place to work. Everyone I know who works there is very satisfied.

Good luck with the move!

Thanks a lot for your insight LeesieBug!

I got my RN license already from Ohio BON yesterday :) so now I can start applying. Yes I heard Akron City hospital is a good place especially with their new ICU's... I also heard the Mercy Hospital in Canton is also good mainly because of the people you work with.

I wonder if anyone could give me any ideas as to how much they offer as far as salary is concerned. Im applying for full time on days.

Again thanks for all your help guys.

Pay will depend on how much experience you have. New graduates start between 21.00 and 23.00, depending on the facility.....so that gives you an idea of what to expect as a minimum.

Yes, the nurses at Mercy are a very nice bunch to work with...

Happy to hear you got your Ohio license and are ready to hunt! You should have NO trouble at all...the nursing job market is pretty hot here right now....LOTS of jobs and not much competition for them. City in particular is still working on filling up slots related to opening the critical care unit last year...I think the unit has something like 96 beds...they needed a HUGE amount of nurses in all departments after that and are still working at filling things back up.

As the daughter of an old school nurse and one of the first critical care nurses in the state of Ohio, I would say stay away from Mercy. They've gone downhill terribly since the sisters sold out to Columbia/HCA. Are they still owned by Columbia/HCA? I don't know. Their webpage leaves out the bit where the sisters turned the reigns of the hospital over to a giant insurance company. My mom worked there during that time and it was terrible. The quality of care took an immediate nosedive. If they've managed to turn things around, good for them. I would be impressed.

sorry to hear that sassy. I looked researched around and found out that the staff their are very nice though. I do hope they turned around from poor management. I may still try to apply and hopefully find out soon if they have. Thanks for your input though.

Mercy is now run by University Hospitals/Sisters of Charity

you may want to look at Aultman Hospital as well, its pretty big. I'm a student there so I can't really speak to what other RN's think of it, but it seems like a nice enough place to work. Of course I'm looking at it from a students perspective, so take it for what its worth. I'll probably take a job there when I'm done with school:idea:
