Hi allnurses family! :)
I am a new LPN (just passed my boards in Apri 2013l) and I am relocating to Syracuse, NY in July 2013. Can someone please assist me with answering the following questions:
1. What hospitals/LTCF can I apply for that is willing to train a new LPN?
2. What is the hourly rate I should expect to receive (NYC offers $24 per hour -agency)?
3. Are LPN's limited to overtime?
4. After doing some research - a lot of the healthcare facilities are downtown syracuse - is it safe to live downtown or should I be looking for housing outside of syracuse?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated
Thank you

I live in Syracuse. Please contact me off board at [email protected]
Thank you Isabel! I just sent you an email
I just sent an email back. I'm posting my response here as well for anyone else:
ost places will train/orient a new nurse. The issue is that the hospitals, for the most part, don't want LPNs on the floor anymore. They do use them in outpatient clinics and some floors, but it's not as prevalent as it used to be. Long term care and home health tend to use more LPNs.
I honestly don't know the hourly rate for LPNs, but LPNs do make more in LTC than they do in offices. As a new LPN in 2005 I made about $13/hr, but I that was just my base--I also got a shift differential because I worked the off shifts. I would think that that rate has gone up at least a little bit, but I can't speak for exact numbers. You'll make less than in NYC, but the cost of living won't be as high.
Here's a list of hospitals and LTC facilities in the area. I'd suggest checking their websites and looking for careers. Keep in mind that some hospitals in the area farm out some of their positions to private companies, so you may actually be employed by a private company other than the hospital. For example, I work at Upstate, but my employer is a company called MedBest.
Hospitals in Syracuse (and all of them have clinics, etc):
Upstate and Community General (Upstate just bought Community)
St. Josephs
Crouse
The VA
Some of the nursing homes/assisted living (and you can get onto the internet and look at others, but these are the ones I can think of off the top of my head (here's the DOH link Nursing Home Search):
Loretto
Sunnyside
James Square
The Hearth
Van Duyn
Rosewood
Central Park
Elderwood Health at Birchwood
Jewish Home of Central New York
Nottingham RCHF
St. Camillus
The Crossings
You can also look in Cortland (30 miles south on I81). There's a few there but I'd do that as a last resort. Loretto had a fair number of LPN positions posted (just don't put a zip code in…it'll give you the entire list).
Overtime depends on the facility, but I would assume that there is always some if you want it.
Do not live in downtown Syracuse near the hospitals. Too risky. Not the best areas. But there are places near where I am and in Liverpool and Camillus and other areas around Syracuse within about 10 - 15 minutes of downtown which are safe and reasonable. I live near Syracuse University's field house and it's a wonderful area. I love it. There's apartments not far from here and there are decent complexes as well as private landlords all over. If you start looking and are interested in an area, let me know and I'll ask. I moved into my boyfriend's house when I moved here, so I can't give you all of the details about good or bad areas, just general ones.
Keep me posted, hope that helps…
