I am starting a new job in a few weeks, I'm a 3rd yr RN. I am quite nervous about starting this new job it is an Acute Nursing Unit (Stepdown from High dependency) 16 bed ward mostly surgical. Not sure what to expect??? This is a Foreign area of nursing to me. I have been told it is not as intensive as HDU but more acute than the general wards (more) staff : patient ratio. Can anyone enlighten me that has worked in a HDU area

I have only worked on a HDU/CCU as a student for one of my placements. Although mine was unusual in that it was a 12 bed with a couple of beds for intensive care patients (staff/patient 1:1), cardiac patients ( up to 1:4), High dependency and critical care care.
I found this an excellent placement as the group of patients were very diverse, therefore a really good learning opportunity.
I think you will find it a really rewarding and challenging area to work in, good for you. I'm sorry that I can't actually offer you any advice. Do they offer inhouse training programs to allow you to gain more knowledge in specific areas? If not, Uni's always offer post grad courses such as critical care for example.
Good Luck with your new job!

Congratulations,
My advice is to smile at every member of staff, ask for help/advice, don't expect to know it all. Be like a sponge, absorb every experience. A year from when you started you will look back in awe at what you have learnt and achieved. You will join those of us who are adrenaline junkies, and become one yourself!

Howdy, thanks for your encouragement, I am excited about starting, haven't got a confirmed starting date yet, but hopefully soon. I am happy to be in touch with people such as yourself, keep smiling!
