Hello,
I was hired at a hospital, everything worked out, then I went to occupational health for my pre-employment screening. The nurse (an RN, not a NP or MD) there who did my physical assessment put on my paperpwork that my left shoulder is weak, and she is not sure I can meet the requirements for the job. I have full ROM, no pain, no symptoms of a neuro deficit or musculoskeletal deficit, and she failed to assess my hand grasps and complete a further assessment based upon "her" findings. Anyways, now I have to see an MD who has to clear me for the job. Any ideas or info on how to handle this situation? I am a healthy person in my early 20's and am left handed so I predominantly am stronger on my left side, and my regular family dr states that this "nurse" is not correct. I am a nurse also, so I am not making fun of nurses, but any input would be appreciated. I have been working in hospitals for 4 years, and have lifted up to 800 pounds without any problem.

You lift HOW MUCH!!?:pumpiron:
Doesn't sound like there is anything you need to do. The doc will clear you.

Have your pcp do a physical stating you are able to do the job with no restrictions.

I agree, get cleared by your pcp.
"Left shoulder weak" is awfully vague and doesn't tell much. And did she look at it unclothed and document any signs of muscle atrophy? Or that there weren't any?
It will be interesting to see what the MD says.

Same thing happened to me when I applied for nursing school. We had to have physicals done by the hospital's occ med nurse. I was told that I was morbidly obese and dangerously hypertensive and profoundly deaf, and that I should be refused a spot at the school. I was overweight but nowhere near morbid, she kept "hmm"-ing and rechecking my BP, which made me nervous, which sent it up, and I do have a hearing deficit but I don't even need hearing aids. I went to the school in tears, and they told me to have a physical done by my doc, whose report was the exact opposite.
