New job! Nervous! Need advice

Published

Hello!

i'll be starting a new job shortly. I've been a RPN for a couple of years, i have experience on multiple floors but mostly on Mental Health (which i have been working the longest). I havent had much experience on unit with patient who arnt independent.

Other unit I worked was Ambulatory care where its more like a "clinic" of outpatients.

I just accepted a position as a NRU- nursing reserve unit. Where i'll be trained on 9 different units to relieve the amount of overtime in the hospital. I AM NERVOUS. The training is 2 days and 2 nights, which to me isnt a lot of time do be trained and then be set on my own. I'm mostly nervous for the staff, i'm unsure of how helpful they will be and I dont know everything and will rely on them for support. I'm trying to prepare for this job as best as I cant but i am stressed of the "what ifs" and im losing sleep over it already!

I want to be able to help my patient the best I can but its hard to in unfamiliar environments, I'm wondering how long it will take to feel confortable/confident?? I dont want to be stressed every single day of the "unknown". Anyyyy advice??

I'm sure you'll be fine, but the first few weeks will definitely be stressful.

Make sure you bring your highest level A-game to work for at least a few months. That means taking care of yourself, getting enough sleep before a shift, eating well, exercising, de-stressing etc.

When you're facing a stressful situation, just tell yourself to "adapt or die" you know, like dinosaurs. Push through that pain when it happens. Remember why you're in this new job, what you want out of it. Ask questions of your fellow nurses. There are good people everywhere. Good luck.
