Hello everyone! I graduated from an Associate degreed school of nursing in June 1994. I only practiced on a Med-surg and Cardiac floor for about 2 1/2 years and then began helping my husband in his newly formed company. And eventually I ended up there full-time. I am the Human Resource Manager, over about 90 employees.
ANYWAY....my husband and I are having prolems after 25 years of marriage and I am thinking of returning to the nursing field. My license has been on inactive status during this time. I don't really care to go back to hospital nursing, but I do think OB would be a huge interest to me. Can anyone give me advice on how difficult it is to break into this field? I live in Ohio. I also have an interest in neonatal ICU. Also advice on where to begin again would be very helpful.
Thanks!

You definitely came to the right place! The nurses here are passionate about OB nursing! Here in No. California it is difficult to get hired in L &D with no experience. I was very lucky to get hired into a Mother Baby Unit and from there to a Hospital that was willing to train me into L & D. I love OB nursing and would never dream of doing anything else. It is a very, physically and emotionally draining job. I don't know how it is where you live but it doesn't hurt to put your application out there and see what happens. Your Med Surg experience will make you a more likely candidate than a brand new grad I would think.
Best of luck!

Thank you. Funny I felt Med/Surg and Cardiac nursing was also so physically an emotionally draining! I think the whole career field is, unless maybe you are a school nurse. Although it probably has it moments too! Thanks for your input. I really enjoy reading all the posts on this site. It is awesome.

Get out there and interview! Gone are the days that the only way to get into OB is if nurses retired or died! Depending on the hospital, and nursing shortage, there should be positions open. In my hospital we currently have new grads and transfers from other units.
Your background is definitely a plus. Again, gone are the days that only
"healthy" young pregnant women existed. Now we're dealing with many
co-existing problems (diabetes, cardiac...)
Good Luck

I agree with the above post. I wish you the best. I am sorry you are having marital troubles. I do hope you get what you want in nursing. Good luck, and let us know how it goes.
