New graduate nurses employment opportunties in GTA

I am a new graduate nurse (RN) in GTA pending CNO registration. I have been applying for many HFO jobs and directly to hospitals (as well as LTC and homecare) with no success. I have a good resume and references (so that is not the problem) so I can't understand why it is so hard. I know there as so many new grads in ontario and the numerous budget cuts but does that mean I can't get one call back?

If anyone is having any luck or struggling like me feel free to share...

That's the reason I left TO and moved to AB. It's not you....read the other thread here about TO job prospects. You might start out part time with AHS, but many facilities are short staffed so there's usually OT to be had. If not another Province, I would look at small towns in ON. The GTA is saturated, so you may be waiting a long time. It's been this way for 3 years now.

I'm in the same position as you. =(

I'm trying to stay positive.

Hey,

I would have thought you will be fairing better than me because I know hospitals will want an Ontario nursing graduate. I have 3 years experience in Nursing in Texas. Wait 3 weeks from the date you applied, this is the time when they started calling me. Most of the callers are from nursing homes, try kijiji.com, most of my callers posted an ad there. But they are all located so far, so if you can't wait and you really want to get a job, be prepared to relocate hehe. I don't have a car so I actually have to say No to some because it will take me 3 hours to go there by bus

It really takes a long time before they call you =( I guess its because they have a lot of applicants since we all took the exam on the same date. Goodluck and stay positive!!

The problem is, many of the hospitals are still on hiring freezes, or they are hiring in limited numbers. You are competing with people from the last 3 years who are unemployed or underemployed. HFO is a joke. I also have a good resume and I had 3 letters of reference, top of my class....blah, blah. The harsh reality is, in times like this, that doesn't matter. Experience counts.

Not to say you won't get a job in TO. But that's what you're facing. If you know of anyone who might be able to get you in somewhere, I'd try that. Networking is also more important than the actual resume. Also keep in mind that TO now has a very stingy mayor who has instituted even more budget cuts....

I don't think HFO is that bad. At least it's something for the time being. I know it doesn't guarantee you a job after the 6-7 months are up but at least it's under WORK EXPERIENCE and not clinical placement in your resume.

27400 try workapolis also. I saw a new graduate program at Toronto Western HOspital. If you guys are willing to relocate, try to search the whole Ontario

Yes, I've been looking at the whole of ontario. =(...

I understand it's hard, but just keep submitting your resumes online at workapolis and other websites. I am in the same boat and still looking for that right job. :kiss
