New Graduate lost in ways to find a job..

hi, I'm soon-to-graduate from nursing school in may,

I just started looking for and applying to jobs but found this process very long and difficult..

I applied to few BC authorities which I haven't even heard back from,

heard Ottawa is laying off nurses and same as alberta.

Is it just me or is everyone finding it difficult to find their first jobs??

and I am only looking at part time/ full time... don't really want to relocate anywhere with casual offer.

I am using every resources possible.. such as Hfo jobs, new grad initiative websites, etc etc..

Really need some advice/guidance/cheerful words! :heartbeat

Nursing runs in cycles. When I graduated pretty much everyone in my class was hired on "casual" hours, which meant we all had about three jobs and had to patch an income together.

Why are you planning on moving right away? It's usually easier to find work in your home area for that first job.

We had to move across Canada once for my husband's job and it was really hard to find a job in BC, they really liked to hire local nurses. They'd hire a new grad over a nurse with experience from out of province.

London Ontario always has jobs, so it seems.

I went state side because of the lack of jobs in my area. I commute everyday, and it hasn't been bad.

No job yet for this RPN grad, still trying though....

due to the budget cut starting late last year, most of the hospital authorities are "hiring freeze" in BC. However, hospitals still hire new grad as "causal", I know some people they work causal jobs several places that would make up full-time job. Good luck

Hey SHort stuff, are you doing the cross border thing to Michigan? I am desperate to get out of Toronto. I have been waiting impatiently for jobs in London or Windsor but there's nothing. I spoke to some managers and they said that in order to get full time you need to get your foot in with a casual or part time and then grab an internal posting of full time. HR said could be in Sept depnding on the budget off the next fiscal year. I am waiting to write my nclex soon and may look at port huron or detroit, i have sponsors there already from my mother in law but am not sure how taxes work.

Welcome back to 1990, the cycle continues.

As a new grad, there was no hope getting a hospital-based job in Windsor, unless I did the "New Grad initiative". And true, it's impossible to get a full-time job in the area..everything is part-time/casual. You could go years working as part-time, especially because of the union. So, I did not participate in the program (missed the deadline..lol), and decided to go stateside right away. I wrote the nclex in august and was hired for a full-time position in October. The commute isn't bad at all. The tunnel is usually empty..except on weekends. And, the NEXUS program helps immensely. I don't know much about the facilities outside of the detroit area. DMC has quite a bit of hospitals in the area. Though they are on a hiring freeze right now, it should open up soon (and there IS a few postings currently). Henry Ford also began hiring again. Other hospitals include St Johns, Beaumont (and others..not really familiar).

The only Windsor jobs that exist seem to be in the visiting nurse position, if you're interested in that.
