New grad wanting a job in the operating room

Published

Hello fellow nurses,

I am recently a new grad wanting to start my career as a perioperative nurse. I did graduate almost a year ago (may 2020) and due to covid and family issues at the time I did not take my NCLEX till almost 9 months later. I recently applied for a new grad residency program and was set up for an interview. However, I felt like my interview did not go the way I expected. The nurse who interviewed me asked if I had any experience in the OR. I mentioned my experience was only through clinical rotations. The nurse responded so you don't have any real experience as a nurse on the floor? and also asked what I have been doing this whole time since I've graduated last may and its almost been a year ? I was left feeling down and sadden that my interview did not go well nor was I given the chance to talk about myself and why I wanted to be a perioperative nurse. I know this type of nursing is not like bedside nursing and it requires dedication and learning. I am willing to do whatever it takes. Is there anything such as courses or certification that I could do that would help with my resume and make me somewhat more qualified for this type of position? I would like to obtain my CNOR but I know I can not qualify till I have spent a minimum of 2 years on the floor as a perioperative nurse. If there is anyone willing to talk about ways I could improve my chances of getting my foot in the door as a perioperative nurse I would greatly appreciate it ?

Look for a facility that is offering AORN’s Periop101. These positions may only open during certain periods, such as the traditional graduation periods. Other facilities may offer year round hiring.

Prepare a response for the question of what you have been doing since graduation - you are now approaching a year out of school and will be competing with fresh graduates with fresh knowledge- by default, you have become a “stale” new grad. What can you offer that puts a positive spin on that?

Join AORN and participate in your local chapter- sometimes it’s who you know that can help you land a job.

Thank you so much for your advice I really appreciate it ?
