New Grad trying to get into PICU

Specialties PICU

I know this may sound crazy, but I plan to graduate with my BSN in May 2015 and my dream is to become a PICU nurse. I know that almost all PICUs want prior experience as a nurse and are typically opposed to hiring new graduates. I was just wondering if anyone has any tips or hints on how to get into one or stand out with my application since I am just a new grad? I am most interested in hospitals in Michigan and Chicago :)

I realize this post is old...but for any other new grads looking at this post... I strongly disagree that a new grad shouldn't take PALS.

First of all, you're going to be required to get PALS, and most likely ACLS, if you get hired for a PICU position. And it would be a great piece to add to a resume.

I took PALS during my third (final) semester of my ADN program.

Was it difficult? You bet. Is it possible? You bet!

I studied a lot and worked hard. My PALS class had three doctors, two NPs, two critical care nurses, and myself...a nursing student/nursing assistant. I ran my codes just as well as the rest of 'em.

It will show your determination and seriousness about the position. It is the exact reason I took it--because I wanted a position as a new grad RN in the PICU.
