New grad who is struggling to find a job

Published

Hello allnurses,

I am a recent graduate with my associate degree nursing. I graduated in December 2010 and have been actively looking for a job since November 2010. I have applied to countless jobs and have not yet to receive a single interview. I am not sure what to do. Since a lot of my classmates who have received jobs had positions as CNAs previously my mom is convinced that I should apply to get my CNA. Can an RN get their CNA? Also, would a hospital hire a CNA who is an RN? I really need help being pointed in the right direction. I have also considered further my education and get my BSN to help me get a job. I have always planned on continuing my nursing education, but I did not plan on doing so until I had worked as a RN for a year. I was wondering if anyone here has received their BSN form University of Phoenix (online) and if this is a good idea to help me with standing out from other new grads for jobs.

Anyone information or suggestions would be very helpful and appreciated.

Thanks,

University of WY has a great RN-BSN program. It is CHEAP for tuition and you don't have to be in state for the tuition price because it's online. It's go at your own pace and my classes pre nursing I took in Washington state transferred in really well. It's worth looking into and is very affordable, a lot more affordable then UOP.

As far as not getting interviews, have you had your resume looked over by professionals? Maybe it's your resume that needs work. Also, dress up very professional and nice and go to the hospitals or other facilities and hand deliver your resume to the nurse managers. Tell them you were applying online but you just wanted to also hand in your resume and put a face to the name. Find ways to stand out.

Keep in mind that some facilities don't care about the degree - it's hard all around for new grads, regardless of degree. My area has a ton of nursing schools and I know plenty of BSNs who are just as frustrated as I am. It all depends on the market in your town. But....if you can afford to keep going to school right now, it certainly can't hurt!

Side note: congrats on graduating, Mi Vida Loca!
