New Grad in San Diego

Published

I am wondering if it is even worth trying to get a new grad RN position in San Diego or surrounding area as an out of state applicant. I know it is very competitive but no one seems to have a straight answer on this.

Here is my situation: I am currently in nursing school in Montana, graduating in December. I love the hospital I work for here as a CNA, and know that I would get hired there, likely in the ICU, which is my area of interest. However, my fiance lives in San Diego and I don't want to be long distance once we are married.

Summary of my resume: Graduating with a BSN, honors degree, and Spanish minor, 3.98 overall GPA. When I graduate I will have over 1000 clinical hours, with my senior preceptorship in the ICU. One year of CNA experience in the float pool with solid references I can use. Most relevant leadership experience includes being president of my campus' chapter of the Montana Student Nurses Association, attending an AACN policy summit in Washington DC as a student representative, co authoring a research paper that is currently submitted to be published, and being a member of Sigma Theta Tau honors society. Because I have not graduated yet, I do not have my licensure or ACLS, just BLS and CNA.

Anyways, I need to give the hospital here an answer soon. With these credentials, will any hospital in California even give me a second look? Thanks for any guidance :)

Hi! I know this is an old post but I am finishing nursing school in Texas this spring and looking to get a new grad position in San Diego. I am wondering how everything worked out for you and if you found a job! Any advice would be appreciated!
