New grad RN-how to make your self standout when meeting the hiring manager?

Nurses New Nurse

I would like some suggestion as a new grad...I will be going to an open house for a nursing internship and would like to make myself standout in someway, so that the hiring manager will remeber me. I know they are probably bombarded during these events. But it just seems like the people who get the jobs have done this in some way. Any suggestions?

Having just met a bunch of students at a big event ... and thinking back on those who stand out in my mind ... The ones that stand out as having made a good impression:

1. Appeared calm, mature, and self-assured. Not that they were necessarily older than the others, but they did not have a "giggly, girlish" way about them. They were warm and friendly without appearing immature. Enthusiastic without appearing like a high school cheerleader. They were dressed accordingly.

2. Ask intelligent questions that show your interest in the patients and the type of work done by the staff of their units. Don't just ask "What's in it for me?" type questions. Keep in mind that Managers want to hire staff members who are genuinly interested in the patients and in the type of work that they are being hired to do. It's also OK to ask about the number of positions they have available, any special qualifications they are looking for, etc. Don't be afraid to say things like, "That sounds interesting. That sounds like the type of work I hope to do. I am very interested in working for your hospital, etc." Let them know that you are very interested and serious about pursuing a job with them. Now is not the time to ask, "How much vacation time would I get?" or similar questions.

3. Make sure your name is prominent on a name tag -- or have a resume to give -- or maybe a business card, etc. Say your name clearly as you introduce yourself. Say it again as you part company. Talk about things that are on your resume. You want them to associate your name with your face, your conversation, and the positive feelings they had when they met you. So, like an advertiser ... tie those together. Say your name while you are smiling, closely associated with your strong points.
