New Grad RN going into ICU - prepare?

Published

Hello!

I graduated with my BSN this fall and accepted a position as an ICU nurse! I'll have a residency period where I figure I will learn how the facility wants things done and learn a lot. But, I have a month until I start and was wondering what people recommend doing to prepare for their first days as an ICU nurse (or what you wish you had done)!

Any other advice you recommend to be successful in this field??

Thank you so much!

Congratulations, that is quite a feat! One thing that is not really explained to well is what to do/where to be during a code. I made a video to help explain different roles and key positions during a code.

I hope this helps! Let us know how you are doing so far in your new role

amazing resource for anyone new to the ICU

Thanks for this. Googling and finding this thread just saved me from spending $50 on a book on amazon. I'm having trouble understanding as much as I feel (or it seems I should according to some others) I need to after a few weeks in the ICU under a preceptor. I encounter something new every day that I've never even heard of, less yet know how to use. Example: Ekos machines. I had no idea what that was or how to operate it. *sigh*
