New grad RN - is getting an outpatient job possible?????

Hi all!

I am a fairly recent new nurse grad in Richmond, VA on my first nursing job hunt. The only medical-related job that I held prior to and during school was ER scribe, though I did that for almost 5 years. Otherwise, I have no previous clinical experience (besides school obviously). I would really really really like to get an outpatient job, as that where my interest lies. I am already working on my BSN/MSN/FNP in an online combo program, and I have a previous bachelor's degree in forensic science. Am I aiming too high for a first job? Should I suck it up and be miserable in a hospital for a year for the experience? Any advice is much appreciated!!!

I think it entirely depends on your locale and situation. I just graduated in June and will be starting in a clinic next week. I did apply to positions on the floor at a hospital where I had worked for several years as a CNA (though knowing I would be unhappy). Fortunately, I didn't get any of those jobs and was offered my perfect position, I just had to wait it out several months.

So it depends on how long you can wait and the potential for positions to become open in your area. Then apply for literally everything that sounds of interest to you. It can be grueling, and multiple rejections can become disheartening but you can always take a PRN position while waiting for what you really want.
