New Grad RN applying for L&D

Published

I am a new graduate nurse. I have an interview for labor and delivery, and I'm thrilled to have the opportunity! What should I expect in the interview? Will I be asked generic interview questions, nursing judgement, or knowledge-based questions? I want to be as prepared as possible so I don't miss out on this opportunity. I appreciate all input! :)

I ended up having three L&D interviews at three different hospitals back when I was applying after getting licensed. I didn't end up getting chosen for the first two due to lack of experience but I did get an offer on the third one as a new grad hiree but I ended up choosing another offer not L&D related. In all three of my interviews I didn't get asked any knowledge-based questions because well...you're a new grad haha. You're not going to know a lot and they should know that. A lot if the questions was behavioral questions such as "tell me a time when this or that happened and how did you handle it" etc. Overall it's very generic and common questions used. Look up common questions if you haven't already and practice from that and it'll make your interview process smoother. My first one felt like a disaster but as I went through more and more interviews I got more practice and felt more confident. The one question I always got for L&D interviews is "why do you want to work on an L&D unit" without a doubt. So really think about the reason why and try to stay away from the cliche answers like "I love babies" or something like that. I talked about my experience during my preceptorship on an L&D unit and highlighted my favorite learning moments and how I enjoyed patient-family centered care and women's health. Hope it all works out for you! Good luck!
