#1 I graduated from an ABSN program 2 months ago and recently passed the nclex. I have a few applications out to several RN residencies and have also talked with several nurses I know that have given me contact information for nurse managers at a few local hospitals (which do not have new grad programs). I would prefer to get into a residency so that I can reinforce everything that was covered so quickly in school, but I am not sure how long I should hold out on contacting these potential employers. Do I apply and wait to hear from a local hospital? I am worried that I will get contacted for a local position before I hear back from the new grad programs. Any advice?
#2 A semi-related question: How exactly do I approach these nurse managers? I will obviously gave the name of the nurse that referred me, but should I ask for a tour of the unit? Ask to meet with with her? I am worried that if I just ask if there have any openings, I would seem like most other applicants. What is a good way to make a positive impression on them before I ask that they keep me in mind if there are any openings?
Thanks!
