New Grad NYP Med Surg Offer

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hi everyone!

I recently just had an interview at NYP/Weill Cornell Medical Center for a medsurg unit. I am a new grad and haven't been able to get a job on a unit I want to specialize in (L&D/posparum/antepartum) because apparently, they don't accept new grads. I was told to start out on medsurg to get experience and then after a year or two apply to the type of unit I'd like.

I've accepted it and started applying to medsurg jobs and got an interview almost immediately. The issue is I left the interview feeling extremely anxious because the unit typically has nurse-to-patient ratios of 1:7 or 1:8. I know how hectic medsurg units are and I'm concerned about what it would be like starting off on a unit like this.

Does anyone who works in #NewYorkCity know if a 1:8 nurse-to-patient ratio is normal? Any advice or insight would be so appreciated!

I wouldn't recommend taking a job that has those ratios.  It will place you at a greater risk to experience burnout and it may discourage you from continuing your career in nursing.  You also want to ensure that you are always protecting your nursing license, with such a heavy patient workload you may be prone to making more mistakes or overseeing warning signs of patient decline in condition.

@mmarlene93 thanks for responding! I didn't end up taking the offer and waited it out and actually interviewed and accepted a position within the specialty I wanted to work in. Very excited and thankful for your insight ?
