I graduated in May with my BSN and immediately began my job search. I currently live in the NYC area and I am unable to relocate yet because I have a lease on my apartment. I want to work in an acute care setting, so I applied to almost every hospital I could think of in the 1 hour driving distance from where I live. I ultimately settled and took a COVID testing job. I keep applying and at this point I applied probably to around 200 hospital positions that I think I might have a chance to get. What should I be doing differently? I rewrote my resume several times over and had others review it. The only idea that I have that might help is to work in a nursing home to gain experience and hopefully that might help. Is there any other route I can be taking to get a hospital job as a new grad in the NYC area?

I'm currently in the same situation and live in NYC. Residency seems to be the easier route to a hospital as a new grad, unless you have a hookup. Now that COVID is among us acute care as a new grad is slim to none right now. Most if not all the hospitals in NYC want a minimum of 1+ year RN experience and usually 2-3 for critical care settings. COVID is making it impossible for new grads to get in critical care settings and all units for that matter. I've applied to many jobs and not one call.... just rejection emails LOL. Nursing homes will gladly hire new grads but I won't go down that route because I believe the hospital setting will give us more formal training.

How is your job search going? I've been looking for residencies but many of them don't want May 2020 graduates anymore.
I will be doing covid-testing per diem for now. I graduated in the Summer, I was eligible to apply for the fall.

How is your job search going? Have you tried applying for urgent care or other medical clinics? What about ambulatory clinics? Some of them are open to new grads. I am a new grad RN in NYC as well and am currently working at a dialysis center.
I was only applying to hospitals, but I coincidentally applied to a COVID swabbing site because it was near where I live. That’s where I currently work and have been working for a while now. I continue looking for hospital positions, but none worked out. I’m hoping that because the cases are rising that the hospitals will hire new grads because of an increase in nursing demand. I might be overestimating my chances but as of now that’s what I’m hoping.
