I am a brand new RN who is VERY interested in being a hospice nurse one day. In nursing school, we were afforded the opportunity to spend a couple of days with a hospice nurse and I LOVED IT!! I applied to numerous hospitals to work on their med/surg floor so I could gain the valuable experience every nurse needs, but no hospitals in my area are hiring new grads. So I recently accepted a position to work at an assisted living facility on the sub-acute floor. My question is, do you experienced hospice nurses believe this is a good stepping stone for me to get into hospice? Will I learn enough to be a good hospice nurse? If you think I am on the right path, how long would you suggest I stay on the sub-acute floor before moving onto hospice? I would greatly appreciate your opinions. Thanks so much!!
