Nurse Beth,
I am a new grad and lost my first job during orientation. I finally reached out to HR to find out my official separation status - fired or quit and whether I was rehireable. I was told my termination was Per Mutual Agreement/ In Lieu of Term†and I have a positive rehire status.
With this information, how long should I wait to reapply to other positions at this hospital? I am currently working elsewhere in a non-hospital setting. Realistically will this have a negative impact on me being rehired there.
Dear Wants to Rehire,
The best time to negotiate for an in-house transfer was before you were termed and while you were still an employee. I know that ship sailed, just mentioning that for other readers or for you in the future.
Your best chances of being rehired now depend on your reputation at the facility and networking.
Your Reputation
Without knowing the details of your circumstances, have you reflected on the incidents that led to your termination, and identified areas for improvement? Have you talked candidly with your preceptor and manager to seek their advice for performance improvement?
Just having that conversation demonstrates that you take responsibility and are open to guidance. Managers in the facility must be able to trust you in order to take a chance on you a second time.
Who You Know
Keep in touch with absolutely everyone you met at the hospital. Staff nurses can tell you about jobs coming up that aren't even posted. Friends can put in a good word for you.
It's good that are employed, and is there another acute care facility in your area you could also apply to? If at all possible, you want to minimize your time outside of the hospital setting.
Best wishes,
Nurse Beth
