I have a severe herniated disc (5mm+) at L5/S1 with severe left sided radiculopathy...and I've done ALL of the conservative treatment out there over the past 5+ years (so, please do not recommend your "magical chiropractor," it won't work). The last option left for me is a microdiscectomy.
I want to hear from you if you have had a microdiscectomy and went back to nursing. I do not want my career to be over before it starts...
I also just accepted an ER/Trauma nurse residency position...is it realistic that I will be able to go back to my job?
Thanks.

It's not exactly the same thing but about five years ago I got whiplash in this same area following a minor car accident. I was an an LPN in the nursing home at the time. I'm currently bridging to RN. I sought chiropractic care in an attempt to avoid surgery and pain meds. When the chiropractor adjusted me the last time it hurt. I complained and was told it was "stretching" and was normal. I drove home with tears streaming down my face. The next morning when I woke up, the pain was unbearable. I had an emergency laminectomy the same day. My questions were the same as yours. I didn't have time to research my surgeon, but he was wonderful. I recovered beautifully and have no pain or numbness, just the scar as a reminder. Talk with your doc. He/she should be able to provide you with some solid answers. Best wishes ?

I had a MD on June 24, 2019 (my second one actually) I had a 22mm herniation at my L5-S1. I am happy to say that I am working my full time nursing job in the ICU with minimal pain. Just keep up with your PT and don't stop stretching!
