New Grad, Denver/Colorado Springs area

Published

Hey,

I will be graduating from a Missouri nursing school in May and I have been calling hospitals in Denver and Colorado Springs. Which of these hospitals should I be concentrating more on? I know it is different for everyone and every hospital has its pros and cons, but I would really appreciate the input. I would be starting in these hospitals as a new grad.

Denver Health

St. Luke's

St. Anthony's

St. Joe's

Memorial Health of Colorado Springs

Thank you so much

It's really hard to answer your question. Do you just want to get a foot in the door? Now bear in mind, I haven't worked as a nurse at these facilities, but I've done clinicals at most of them.

If you want a chance to expand your horizons--shoot for St Joseph's, or St Luke/Pysb. St Joseph is a tri-hospital system (Exempla), they're tied to Lutheran, and Good Samaritan.

If you want anything, Denver Health's ER is known as the "knive and gun club" on Friday, and Saturday nights. My male classmates loved Denver Health. St Anthony's, I can't speak from personal experience, but most of my classmates didn't like the bureaucracy.

I don't know anything about Colorado Springs.

Good luck!

thank you so much for your input. did those guys like Denver Health because of the interesting things they saw? also, I could see why St. Joe's and St. Lukes would be good places to go, St. Lukes has been very helpful when I emailed them and everything. Thank you so much for your info, it helped a lot.

The guys liked DH because, it's a very busy place, lots of things going on all the time. DH is a love/hate thing---either you really love it, or you really hate it.

I can chime in on Colorado Springs. Memorial Hospital just opened a hospital on the north end of the Springs and have laid several people off because of there are no patients. They have a knock out ER but no ICU, from what I've heard. Also, Penrose just opened a north hospital as well and it took a lot of business away from Memorial. Memorial North has a great labor and delivery ward though depending on the type of nursing you want to do! Hope that helps!

Colorado Springs -

I don't believe there are any new grad positions available at Memorial right now, and those positions that are open are being filled from inside or are specialized. Hopefully they do begin to hire more RNs and CNAs soon as we have not seen replacements over the past year for those who have left.
