New Grad & UW

U.S.A. Washington

Hi everyone! I'm sure this has been asked about a thousand times, but I was wondering what people have to say about nursing at the U of W in Seattle. I'm graduating in May with a BSN and am interested in maybe working there but I can't figure out their silly website! What sort of training do they offer etc? Or do they even like to hire new grads? I am interested in getting a MSN & know that U of W has a very good nursing school. Also, any general info on Seattle would be great (is it friendly, is traffic insane etc.). I'm still young & if I move that far away from my family (born & raised in Texas) I want to make sure it's the right choice! Thanks guys!

UWMC is an excellent hospitial. I am currently in the MEPN program at UW (bsn-msn program). I did one of my clinicals at UWMC. They do have really great training program and you learn tons there. Another UW hospitial is Harborview which is another great hospitial to gain some experiences. I'm doing clinical at Harborview now. Both hosptials hire new grads but not in the ICU.

As far as Seattle, the weather sucks and traffic is bad. Parking is expensive at both hospitials. Although, I must say public transportation is really good especially if you live in the Seattle area.

Actually, my friend was a new grad in June (Seattle U) and got hired into Harborview's Neuro ICU. So it is possible!

We have 4 seasons and it rains more in NYC. We just have more cloudy days.

Traffic and parking used to be okay. But in the past few years there seems to have been an influx of people to the area. The bus system is good and they're working on a lightrail system.

It's a small city, the people are smart and nice, but we hate Californians and those who complain about the rain.

Lc3,

From what you have been posting, it looks like you and I have a similar background in psych. Do you really like UW? I am finishing up my prereqs so that I can apply there for 2009. Right now I'm in the midst of waiting to hear from UCSF, Yale, USF, Georgetown, among others. Really want to get into UCSF.

Anyways, I'd like to hear more about your undergrad background, the whole admissions process for you, and how the program is at UW. Thanks!

i work at UWMC and love it. they have a great program for new grads and the staff is so friendly, helpful, understanding. it has a very diverse population with a main focus on cancer. it is a research hospital so sometimes the downside is dealing with the residents who are essentially like new grads too, but they are very approachable and some are great, some have some learning to do. it is a great collaboration hospital with all the interdisciplinary teams. i love it there
